“When Heaven Calls” is a journey of grieving alone. In this piece the figure is reclining, overcome by the pain of grief, encompassed by it.
Having lived through trauma and loss, channelling those feelings of loneliness and lack of familial support into the piece. A jagged pouring of blood riddles the sky and over the head of the figure, symbolizing the trauma the woman has endured and how it encases her mind.
The woman has nothing left to give, but is also unable to receive: empty and drained.
Childlike figures of fish swim peacefully under the figure as if life is stirring beneath her but she is too depleted to notice. The woman seeps deeper into the pose as if easing into the vulnerability of her experience and searching for what it will teach her.
The yellows, oranges and reds dance in the sky as if hinting at madness, but the figure remains still in her journey.

“One of the hardest things to do, was learning that we don’t need to please anyone – not even our own beliefs.”
– Carina Martins
